For the past ten years, Ryan Dalman has been creating decorative, functional house wares for sale throughout the Midwest. Ryan’s focus is to follow ancient traditions and wisdom using sustainable techniques that have been carried through time.
After completing degrees in Earth Science and Ceramics from Northern Michigan University in 2000 he felt his path was clear. In order to live close to the earth and to reduce the impact of living on our precious planet, he and his family built a far from the power grid in the north woods of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. There he felt a powerful connection to his surroundings and a freedom to create. Through hard work, ingenuity, and a good deal of help, Ryan has built an efficient, studio, and wood burning kiln that use fuel nature provides (sun & wood).
The kiln is a Noborigama, or climbing kiln, based upon 3000-year-old technology from the Far East. It produces a large quantity of high quality, durable, useful wares while maintaining the unpredictably and whimsy of wood firing. Ryan’s decorations are a commentary about the natural world. Some may look out their window and see the woods. Through his studies and living with nature he looks closer to observe all of the subtle variation within it. Dalman Pottery is striving for this variation among individuals to create a beautiful body of work.
